20 August - Spectrum - Diamondback Rattler, Warhorse, Atrocities
Last Wednesday featured an unusually good lineup for Spectrum, perhaps I’ve been hitting the wrong nights. I just managed to catch the last couple of tracks from Diamondback Rattler, a local band that some have been biggin’ up lately.
They have a dirty-country kind of psych-rock sound, with two guitars fronting drums and a low, pounding piano in place of bass, their singer, stomping on sleigh bells in thick leather boots.
Here’s a Video of them playing ‘Shallako’, see for yourself.
Warhorse were on next, and they were decent. One of their newer songs is rad, a 7 minute blues kinda thing that builds down and settles in a ricketing groove, echoing guitar, minimal bass, riding snare, before a burst of celebration and accusatory rock.
Atrocities finished the night off, with maybe 50 drink-ladens left in the room, playing to friends, a barely contained wall of noise and drums, near-everyone took vocals, an obligatory warning for smoking onstage, and an Eastbeats cover that I didn’t pick up on. Once done, I rolled the fck out down an empty Oxford St.
